MISSION MEXICO

MARCH 26-31, 2010.

WHERE AND WHY WE WENT:  800,000 Mexican families don’t have basic secure homes. 40% live below the poverty line.  People can work nonstop and still see poverty tear their families apart. The situation is even more severe along the Mexico-US border because they come to the border towns in hope of finding work in the US.  Others are involved in the immigration struggle and find themselves deported even after spending years in the US and building their families and homes here. The border towns become the only home for many with few resources. The churches in Mexico are faced with caring for the permanent residents of their communities as well as those who have more recently sought refuge in their communities  In San Luis Rio Colorado, some quarter of a million people seek to make their homes and to raise their families. Some are well established and have suitable means of support, though far below standards north of the border. Others have managed to acquire a small lot and are trying to find meager ways to build some type of home. The poorer of these families live in the community south of the city in the area served by Iglesia Metodista Ismaschias, and their pastor, Enrique Uranga.

We are hoping to go back each year to serve people in San Luis Rio Colorado. It was an awesome experience!
